I do remember a story about Leroy, though. Right around 1957-58. He was working for Ain't Bea's husband, Jimmy Holbert, in the cement-finishing business. Keep in mind that Leroy was around six-foot twelve and about 280 lbs; all muscle. Percy (I remember Ain't Bea used to spell it Persery on his paycheck), was a young man who worked with them. Probably weighed 150 with his boots on and was kinda' slight of build. One day, when they were working on a really big house, Leroy told Percy: "I'll bet you $50 I can finish that whole cement slab in one day." Percy said: "I ain't fixin' t' bet witcha'...I thank you can do it." Anyway, next day, Leroy finished the slab and did a good job on it. He told Percy: "I done it. I want my $50!!" Percy said: "Mr. Leroy, I TOLD you I wasn't fixin' to bet witcha'." Leroy's response was: "You gonna' PAY me, boy!!" And, of course, he paid. Remember, $50 was on helluva lot of money in those days. Probably two weeks pay. Poor Percy... LoveJay |
